Most authentic block-printed patterns rely on more than one block, each with a distinct role:
- The outline block (called rekh, from the Hindi word for “line”) lays down the sharp black or dark contour of the design first.
- Filler blocks (datta) go in next, adding interior color and detail inside those outlines.
- A background block (gadh) can cover the remaining negative space in a solid or secondary tone.
A single complex design can use anywhere from two or three blocks to a dozen or more. Each one requires the printer to align it against marks left by the block before it—by hand, by eye—hundreds of times across a single length of cloth. That’s why hand block-printed fabric never looks perfectly uniform the way digitally printed cloth does. Three clusters, in three different corners of the country, taught me most of what I know about this side of the craft. Bagru, near Jaipur in Rajasthan, where the Chhipa community has practiced hand block printing for generations using mud-resist and natural-dye techniques. Ajrakh, practiced by Khatri artisan families now concentrated in Kutch, Gujarat, after Partition split the original community across the border with Sindh—known especially for its two-sided printing, a mirrored, deeply layered pattern printed on both faces of the cloth. The Colors Come From the Ground, Not a Chemical Drum
This is the part that changed how I think about clothing entirely. Natural dyeing isn’t a stylistic choice you make after the fact—it’s a fundamentally different relationship with color, and it starts long before anything gets dyed.
Cellulose fibers like cotton don’t naturally bond well with plant and mineral dyes, so the cloth first goes through mordanting—typically alum, sometimes combined with a tannin like myrobalan (locally called harda) or pomegranate rind—which prepares the fiber to hold color and improves how well that color survives washing and sunlight. Only after that does the dyeing begin, and the source of the color itself is almost always something you’d recognize: indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) for blues that range from pale sky to near-black; madder root for reds, rust, and terracotta; marigold for yellows; iron rust for grays and blacks. None of this is fast. A single natural indigo vat needs to be built up and maintained like a living thing—it’s fermented, not mixed—and colors from madder or indigo often need to rest on the cloth for one to two weeks before they’re considered fully set. When people say natural dyeing is “slow,” this is what they mean in practice, not just as a marketing word.

Watching this process—the fermented indigo vat, the madder simmering to a particular shade of terracotta and no further, the printer checking a test swatch against the light before committing a whole length of cloth to a color—I stopped thinking of color as something added to fabric and started thinking of it as something the fabric had been through: a record of a specific vat, a specific water source, a specific hand controlling the temperature and the timing.

Reimagining the Tradition, Not Diluting It
Here’s where I’ll be honest about the tension, because pretending it doesn’t exist is where a lot of “heritage craft” brands lose credibility: traditional block prints are often busy by design. Dense repeats, many colors, a lot happening in a small space—that’s the vocabulary these techniques were built in, and it’s beautiful in its original context.
It’s also not always what a contemporary wardrobe wants. So the work I’ve spent the most time on isn’t inventing new techniques—it’s editing. Taking a single motif and letting it breathe at a much larger scale, rather than repeating it densely. Reducing a pattern to two tones instead of six so the architecture of a lattice or a trellis design (what’s traditionally called a jaal) becomes the whole point, rather than one layer among many. Treating the natural bleed and imperfection of a resist-dyed edge—the kind of mark that traditional printing usually tries to control—as the actual subject of a print, instead of hiding it.
The rule I keep coming back to is simple: if a print looks intricate or CAD-perfect, we’ve lost the plot. The craft is restraint, not density.

What doesn’t change, no matter how much the pattern gets simplified, is where it comes from. The yarn is still spun by hand before it’s woven—a step a lot of “handloom” labels skip, since most only hand-weave yarn that was machine-spun to begin with. The dye is still named, not just “natural-looking.” The cluster—Bagru, Ajrakh, Pedana—is still the actual source, not a marketing word borrowed from it.

Why This Matters More Than It Sounds Like It Should
I’ll admit the honest reason I care about naming all of this so specifically—the mordant, the block names, the actual town—is that vagueness is how greenwashing happens. “Naturally inspired,” “artisan-crafted,” “heritage print”—these phrases cost nothing to print on a tag. Being able to say this red is madder root, mordanted with alum, printed in Bagru costs something: it means we can’t hide behind the words if the claim isn’t true.
That’s the standard I’m trying to hold this brand to as it grows—not because it’s a differentiator (though it is), but because the artisans who taught me this craft would know immediately if I got it wrong, and they’d be right to call it out.
